Ahead of this Friday’s release of his debut LP CHUG (Dine Alone Records), Toronto’s Cam Kahin has premiered his defiant, intoxicating new single/video “yeah right!” at FLOOD Magazine. “I wanted to make a song that captured the 2000’s pop punk sound that I grew up on,” Kahin explains. “I was feeling particularly overwhelmed with newfound responsibilities and just getting older. I felt like these chords and this energy was the perfect backdrop to let out some of those frustrations.” Its Adit Dixit-directed video pulls listeners into CHUG’s world: “We ditched the big cameras and lights and shot all of this on a skateboard-style VHS cam,” Dixit says. “The video was pieced together across our journey working on the visual world for this album back in Dunnville, with a big chunk coming from Mudcat Festival–this once-a-year festival the whole town shows up for. It’s not staged or precious. It’s just real life, reckless abandon.”
“yeah right!” follows previous singles “where’d it all go wrong,” “limbo,” “come around,” and “break or bend”–which earned early praise and support from Spotify’s New Music Friday, Exclaim!, Audiofuzz, Ones to Watch, and more. Kahin is set to play an album release show on January 24th in Toronto and has also confirmed upcoming shows in Hamilton, ON as part of CBC Presents: Road to the Junos on February 6th and JUNOfest presented by CBC on March 27th; a current itinerary is below and tickets are on-sale now. After two breakthrough EPs earned him praise as one of Canada’s “fearless new rock voices” (CBC Music), Cam Kahin’s full-length debut is a visceral, heartfelt reflection on persistence from a 23-year-old living in a chaotic time. Across its 10 impactful tracks, he lets his rawest feelings rise to the surface without apology or polish. Produced by Kahin alongside David Steinmetz, Jeremiah Pick, and longtime collaborator Will Crann, CHUG is an emotionally and sonically immediate collection that signals a defining moment for the young artist-to-watch.
Lyrically, Kahin captures the quiet struggles of isolation and imposter syndrome, the weight of trying to rebuild, and the subtle hope in beginning again. One standout line from “come around” distills the record’s emotional mission: “Despite your broken parts, amass the means to start.” It’s a mantra for anyone feeling stuck, an urgent call to action when inertia feels like it’s taking over. “I think this song summarizes the sentiment behind a lot of this new music, which is resilience despite constantly feeling beaten down,” Kahin explains. “I think a lot of people right now feel exploited or forgotten and all I want to do is shine a light on them.”
Musically, CHUG is Kahin’s boldest and most cohesive work to date. From towering choruses to more introspective textures–hinting at some of Kahin’s biggest influences, everything from Blink-182 and Green Day to Radiohead and Biffy Clyro–the record leans into the organic roots of alternative rock, eschewing programmed drums and digital tropes in favor of something more raw and human. “This is an album I’ve wanted to make since I was a kid,” Kahin says. “It’s the culmination of everything I’ve been building toward.”
