“DEAR-GOD takes the confrontational sound and spirit of punk and metal and infuses it into
moody, snarling experimental hip-hop.” –Revolver Mag
“The Canadian singer walks you through three levels of hell.” –The FADER
(July 30, 2020) – 19-year-old experimental hip-hop and hardcore artist DEAR-GOD (Robert Ortiz) premieres “Buck” today via Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show on Apple Music, now streaming HERE. It’s the first offering of new music this year from the newly signed Dine Alone Records artist, releasing the single via his own imprint End Time as well. Purchase “Buck” HERE.
“Buck” mixed by Lars Stalfors (Lil Peep, Soccer Mommy, St. Vincent) builds on the unique sound he first introduced with self-released debut single “The Burbs” and second song “Bitter Winter” last year. Clash Mag declared, “A bedroom talent…’The Burbs’ is a glimpse of the world through his twisted lens, fusing rap delivery with sharp hardcore punk…truly DEAR-GOD is in a world of his own.”
“Buck is a song about hypervigilance,” shares Ortiz. “To go ‘buck’ is to question everyone and everything around you… to puff up your chest and wear a mask of masculinity in order to survive. It’s very easy for every boy to fall victim to this mentality in their quest to manhood with all of the things we are taught about masculinity. I still experience this battle with my own personal quest, and maybe I will for the rest of my life.”
The new track picks up right where Ortiz left off in 2019, channeling a relentless energy and attitude into his new music that calls back to the notorious reputation of his live shows back in his hometown and base of Brampton, Ontario and beyond. Last year, DEAR-GOD opened for Wu-Tang Clan at Toronto’s MattyFest, and joined The Dirty Nil on tour. Drawing comparisons that range from Beastie Boys and Rage Against the Machine to Show Me The Body and King Krule, his singular style has already been celebrated by The FADER, Revolver Mag, Clash Mag, and Beats 1. Stay tuned for more from DEAR-GOD coming soon.
