Biography
The keen music critic seeking to singularly define The Golden Dogs would discover all too quickly the near-futility of this quest. With their arsenal of intelligent and addictive pop n rock, these Canadian underdogs are just as comfortable sustaining a furious rock rage, or pumping out robotic art-pop as they are laying out a playful funky groove. There have been countless influences and genres thrown at The Golden Dogs’ wall of sound – The Pixies, The New Pornographers, Wings, Ween, Pavement, Sonic
Youth, Spoon, The Kinks, Tom Waits, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs – from garage punk to art pop, new wave to grunge – these references are smattered throughout their critical
history, and all of them are accurate in some way. It is this impressive spectrum that makes the challenge of defining their sound so exhilaratingly frustrating.
The Golden Dogs’ leaders, the husband and wife duo of Dave Azzolini (vocals, guitar)
and Jessica Grassia (vocals, drums), have been married to the band and each other since 2003. Together they meticulously create, produce and engineer the band’s striking brand of high-energy, smart power pop. The magnetic and infectious chemistry they share, both on stage and off, is the true golden core at the heart of this band and it is their genuine, spirited approach to making music that keeps the creative motor running.
The band’s catalog of critically-acclaimed albums, along with the notoriety of their supercharged
live shows, have landed them around the world on stages with Canadian luminaries such as Feist, Sloan, Joel Plaskett, Ron Sexsmith and Zeus. Throughout the last decade, they have triumphantly cemented their cult-like status within the ranks of the Canadian music scene, gaining them fervor along the way amongst music fans,
critics and artists alike.
The band’s fourth studio album ‘Surf Music For The Non-Swimmer’, due out in 2015, will deliver an unrelentingly catchy, raw and radically diverse set of tracks – the first new music from the band in three years and arguably their most mature and inventive. With an already-acclaimed fresh live show featuring new stellar rock mates Stefanie McCarrol (keys, guitar) & Alejandro Cairncross (bass), the Golden Dogs will continue to pummel their way through the rock ranks with a sweaty fist-pump, a hypnotic kick drum and
guttural yell.
