Stadium Cake
Biography
Olivia Hally and Pepita Emmerichs formed Oh Pep! while at music secondary school in Melbourne, Australia. With three EPs under their belt since 2012, Oh Pep!’s debut LP Stadium Cake is a coming of age for the duo, who have been touring internationally since early 2015. The album will be released June 24th on Dualtone. Today, the duo released the first single off the forthcoming record titled “Doctor Doctor.” Stadium Cake will be released digitally on CD and vinyl and fans can pre-order the album today via Dualtone. Oh Pep! will be on tour in the U.S. throughout the summer. Highlights include the Mercury Lounge in New York City on June 29th, Schubas in Chicago on July 11th and dates with Lord Huron and Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats on the East Coast.
Oh Pep! made a huge impact at October 2015’s CMJ festival where KCRW chalked them up as one of their top artists that ‘Won’ CMJ, as did NPR’s Bob Boilen, who proclaimed “The Melbourne band’s music is infectious.Their harmonies are sweet, with lyrics that are thoughtful, deep, funny and poetic.”After their performance at Nashville’s AMAs, Pop Matters (who also included them in their top picks) described “Seeing Oh Pep! Is one of those times when the crowd realizes they’re seeing future stars for the first time.” Shortly after, the band recorded NPR’s Tiny Desk giving U.S. music fans got a chance to see Pepita Emmerichs’ virtuosic playing on both mandolin and violin and Olivia Hally’s gorgeous voice and heartbreaking delivery. Now KEXP has named them one of 2016’s “bands to watch.”
Stadium Cake was recorded in Echo Lake, Nova Scotia in February and August of 2015 with Canadian producer, Daniel Ledwell. The band’s obsession with good songs, regardless of genre or generation, has led them to write a record with limitless horizons. On first single “Doctor Doctor” Hally sings,”Where is the light, for me it’s the darkest night” over a captivating beat, whilst Emmerichs plays a subtly driving and haunting violin line. It’s this same light and dark that makes up the tapestry of Stadium Cake and encapsulates the duos unique collaboration. It’s the yin and yang of their personalities that brings a tension to each unsuspecting pop song.
Now both aged 24, Oh Pep!’s Hally and Emmerichs have a big year ahead in 2016. It will see them tour Europe for the first time supporting Lake Street Dive, a headlining trek across North America and a triumphant return to their native Australia.
