Biography

Data Romance (n) \’d?-t? r?-‘man(t)s\ 1 :the paradox between human feeling and hard technology 2 :instrumentalist-producer Ajay Bhattacharyya and singer/lyricist Amy Kirkpatrick 3 :the perfect contradiction 4 :evocative electronic/vocal duo.

(September 18, 2012 – Toronto, ON) SQE Music/Dine Alone Records is pleased to announce the arrival of the first full-length album Other, from Data Romance in Canada. Slated for release February 19, 2013, Other is a lush, cryptic expression of dark feeling that is internalized and reproduced as its own sensory journey. The album’s first single, glitchy-goth opener “Caves,” is being released today and sets the tone for the record. In addition to the release of the single, the band is also releasing a remix bundle that will feature remixes from Phon.o. MMOTHS and Benjamin Damage.

Ajay Bhattacharyya and Amy Kirkpatrick, known collectively as Data Romance are two 25-year-olds from the wind-swept reaches of Victoria, on Canada’s Vancouver Island. While the music and vocals seemingly come from opposite ends of the artistic spectrum, it’s this dichotomy that ultimately blends to create the band’s unique personal sound. The band released their self-titled debut EP last summer, which featured their evocative single “The Deep.” Shortly after, the band joined the acclaimed IDentity Festival and opened for Digitalism’s 2011Winter tour.

Written and recorded in Vancouver, BC – true to Data Romance’s aspirations, Other is both a continuation of that trajectory and a fresh, captivating introduction. On the standout track “Others,” Amy’s icy

vocal is cannily double-tracked, amplifying Ajay’s replication of a steady low-end pulse and chamber echoes, while “Can’t Keep Your Mind Off,” taps into a warm electro vibe. And then there’s poetic closer “Finish Round,” a beautiful, organic blend of melodic transparency and harmonic atmosphere that’s tailor-crafted for those poignant final minutes before a train pulls up at your stop. It’s a song that reconciles the authors’ individual styles after an album’s worth of careful flirtation.
